Where did you go?
Gone to lesser lives?
Gone to greater promises?

Your washtub
waits in a wash
beside a house
long since torn down
by those
who claimed your land.
A galvanized witness
to your presence here
left behind
shot full of holes
like so many
of your dreams.

The fireplace you built
from native stone
with strength and sweat
to warm a lifetime
stands alone
chimney toppled
mantle gone
its ornate stonework
long removed
to renovate
another home
in town.

You “proved up”
on pioneering spirit
and grand ambition.
But circumstances
unforeseen
upset the harvest
broke the banks
robbed all hope
and guaranteed
to leave these fields
untended.

I stood in pity
at such loss
and thought:

“Here once,
good people
lived and loved.”

“Was all in vain?”

Comes the answer:

No,
their love and faith remain.”

Very interesting writing.  And I agree, they must not be forgotten.  Joyce

An old homestead... gone, but not forgotten.

Glad to read you, again.

coyote:  Your poem struck a very responsice chord in me, as my parents homesteaded in northern Alberta, in Peace River country, in the early 1920's.  I still remember my early years there, in the 30's and how sad I was when we left the area.  I later learned that after we were gone a short time, people came in and took doors, windows, and eventually most of the buildings too. As hard as the life was there was much to be said for it on the positive side!

Thanks for reading everybody.
My grandparents and great-grandparents were homesteaders who never "proved up" and let them go back too.
Their places are still there, but little remains save their spirit.
