King Rufous

His gorget flashing brilliant orange,
The rufous comes, just like a flame.
He chases all the others off,
As though it is a childrens game
And while he is pursuing one,
Another comes to take a drink.
He has to hurry though, because,
That rufous is quick as a wink!

He sits above the feeder jar.
Surveys the area to see,
If any hummingbirds appear
To challenge his sovereignty.
A greedy little king, he is,
But we forgive his miser ways.
To see him fly is such a joy
And adds much beauty to our days!

Joyce:  Thanks.  The rufous hummingbird, is brilliantly colored, with a an irridescent orange throat that flashes in the sunlight. He is very aggressive and possessive of the hummingbird feeder and tries to drive the others away.  They are really beautiful. They are the first ones to come here in April and the last to leave in the fall. the rest of him is shades of bronze, gold, and brown. We have two feeders up now, there are so many of them here.

Hi June:  Thanks for your remarks.  I don't know where you live and that has a lot to do with seeing a rufous!  I'm in North Idaho and on their flyway.  They winter in Mexico and fly as far north as Alaska in the spring.  Some of them nest around here so we have them until September.

Adorable !

I found your precious little hummer
fluttering about the Internet
Captured him to show our friends
just how cute feathers can get~

june:  Thanks for coming back to my reply. I hate to tell you this, but you do not have hummingbirds in England.  They are a North American bird, both North and South.
Some of the most beautiful ones live in South America, but the rufous is really gorgeous too.

I'm sure you have many wonderful things that we don't!

Love
Betty Lou

Dear Marge:  Thanks much for posting the picture.  When the sun shines on them, their throat is a flaming orange and sure catches the eye.  They are really a feisty little bird! Also noisy.  They make a raspy sound at times when they are agitated, that's far bigger than they are!

Michelle:  The hummingbirds are a joy to have around, at least for us!  I know you don't have them where you are, but you have so many other beautiful things!
