The Relic

The old barn sits in tangled grass,
Where once the cattle used to pass
And enter in, to stand in stalls,
Protected by the sturdy walls.
The air inside was warm and dim
And milk pails, frothing to the brim,
Were carried to the house and poured
In shallow milk pans, then were stored
And chilled, until the cream would rise.
A thick and golden, sweet surprise!

But now, the dome is gone. The vane,
Will never point the wind again.
Yet pigeons, in the loft still stay,
Just as they used to yesterday.
I close my eyes and I can see,
The little girl, who once was me,
Go running in the barn and out
And then, if no one was about,
Climbing to the loft, where I,
On heaps of fragrant hay, would lie.

But looking at this relic now,
It's hard to believe each horse and cow,
Headed homeward eagerly
And thought it was the place to be.
The weathered wood has lost its paint,
Yet still, there seems to be a faint
Lingering of the red it wore,
With white on window frames and door.
I turn away. Its day is done
And someday soon, the wind and sun,
The snow and frost, will finally
Destroy this relic, dear to me!

A relic worth its salt lives within our hearts, does it not?... This is a fine write, T...

Nan:  Thanks for commenting and you're so right!  There are some things that shine in memory, just as they were when last seen!

Really enjoyed this as I have a fondness for old barns. I have good memories of playing with kittens in my grandparents old barn and the smell of hay was wonderful too. The old barns are rapidly fading away.

Just like the barn we used to have.  Only Daddy had a separator for the cream.  This used to be a dairy farm when Stan was young but the barn is gone and we have a machine shed in its place. The old barns are going fast.  Joyce

BettyLou~
You've got some dynamite imagery here.
Evoking some memories from my younger days.

'milk pails, frothing to the brim,'

'The vane, will never point the wind again'

I ENJOYED the entirety of this piece ...
but the lines above are EXCELLENT 'memory-processors'~

Songbird:  Thanks for sharing your memories of your grandparents barn.  I always thought a barn was such a wonderful place, for both people and animals!  Hate to see them disappearing, but they are becoming a thing of the past.

Joyce;  I thought perhaps this would bring back some fond memories for you.  It was my uncle's barn I wrote about and he finally did get a cream seperator, but these memories are from an earlier time. There never was cream like that anywhere else!

passing shadows:  Thanks for commenting on this one.  It is always sad to see things we have loved in happier times, disappear.
At least we have the memories of what it once was.
