Shadow On My Soul

There was a couple that I knew,
Who fell in love.Their dream came true.
A lovely wedding in the spring.
A country home that used to bring
Great happiness to them and all
The many friends, who came to call.
Their lives seemed perfect.Before long,
The world intruded.Things went wrong.
He went off to fight a war.
She, in silent suffering bore
The lack of letters.Finally,
She moved back home, where she could be
More useful in such varied ways
And ease her mothers ailing days.

The years went by. He never came.
She used to sit and write his name,
Like prayers, upon a tablet page,
Or pace the floor in grief and rage.
What happened to him, we don't know.
His disappearance brought such woe!
She grew so pale and thin that we
Lost track of who she used to be
And when she called me up to say
That she was moving far away,
I wanted desperately to find
Some word, to make her change her mind,
But knew our friendship couldn't fill
The emptiness she battled still.
Her going left me less than whole
And cast a shadow on my soul!

Betty, I don't know if this is from your own personal experience, but it is very sad. I'm sure it has happened a lot. You really did a beautiful job of writing it. Thanks for sharing with us.
Hugs,
Ethel

A very sad one indeed...but very true to life.  So many military wives (and husbands) out there waiting still for the return of their loved ones.  Very well written Trillium!  --Jamie

Dear Marge:  This is a true story and I knosw it's been repeated numerous times. I think it has to be worse losing someone and not knowing what happened to them!
