( I wrote this some time ago.  Marge's poem reminded me of it.  I don't think I've posted it before.)
The Fungus

Have you heard of the "Humongous Fungus"
That's been growing such a long, long time?
(That phrase was authored by someone else.
I just had to turn it into rhyme.)

In Oregon's Malheur National Forest,
Starting from a microscopic spore;
There it's been silently spreading,
For twenty-four hundred years and more.

It covers twenty-two hundred acres,
Spreading an acre a year, underground.
It's the Armillaria Ostoyae
The second such one to be found.

Washington was the first to have
The largest Armillaria claim.
A fifteen hundred acre monstrosity.
Oregon has stolen Washington's fame.

This tree killing mushroom is also called,
The world's largest living thing.
It's killing trees with its rhizomorph,
That looks like a black shoestring.

Sending up golden mushrooms
That aren't really good for much,
But edible with butter and garlic,
If you're one who cares for such.

Associated Press wrote this story,
And used this harmonious name.
I just played around a bit with it.
My little poetry game.

It will probably be made into a movie,
Or a horror story mystery.
Perhaps the very first poem about
The Armillarria is this one by me.

Joyce

Joyce:  I remember reading about this awhile back, but I would never have attempted to write a poem about it.  You are brave indeed and also very successful!
Neat poem!

Of course you sent me off searching the Internet for MORE information.
