Being in the US for now nearly 8 years, I have adopted many "American" customs and tradition, but consequently have lost many parts of my heritage. I wanted to bring back some of my Filipino culture, and so first I have to remember the language. I can recall only the basics now, but it was enough for me to write my first ever poem in Tagalog (the Philippine language): Akin anak, bumangon ka sa panaginip mo. Ang araw na maliwanag ay tumaas para lang sa iyo. Ikagalak mo ang panahong ito, sapagka't bawat bagay ay ngayon sayo at sayo lamang. Kunin mo ang itong saglit bago sha umalis... Bumangon ka, anak, at hawakan mo ang mga biyaya na binigyan sa iyo. Translation: My child, awake from your dreams. The bright sun has risen only for you. Be glad at this day, for everything is now yours and yours only. Take this moment before it vanishes... Awaken, my child, and hold the blessings that were given to you. ~It will sound funny if you read it, but it sound you can say the word most accurately if you read it with like a Spanish accent [Philippines was rules rules by Spain for 300years so our language has mixed some spanish words in it]. That means all vowels have the short, stressed sounds and every vowel is sounded (i.e. tumaas: tu-ma-as) Hope you enjoyed it. If not, just read the English translation, hehehe.
