Red Slippers

I was about thirteen, I guess,
When mother bought a lovely dress
Of rosy red, to give to me,
Because I won a spelling bee.
It had a collar, snowy white,
With little buttons, pearly bright.
I tried it on, with heart a-race,
When imaged in the mirror's face.

I loved the way it fit and felt,
But an awful blow was dealt,
When upon my feet, I spied,
Plain, brown oxfords, neatly tied.
I couldn't ask for new shoes too.
And there was nothing I could do,
But simply hang the dress away
And save it for some future day.

The weeks went by and grandpa came.
I wore the red dress, to my shame
And after slipping to my seat,
I sat there staring at my feet.
After supper, there was dancing.
I remember all the prancing.
All the warmth of people caring.
Sounds of laughter and the sharing.

Grandpa left and then there came
A small, brown package, with my name.
Surely fashioned by the fairies,
Slippers, red as holly berries!
I have them still, though old and worn.
The ruby leather, split and torn.
For Grandpa left us then, you see
And these were his last gift to me!

Yes this is a wonderful memory of a thoughtful grandpa.  I can remember one time waiting at home for the new shoes Mama an Daddy were bringing back to me.  I was picturing patent leather slippers.  They turned out to be hightop laceups and I hated them.  But I didn't say so.  Joyce

What a beautiful pair of red slippers they must truly be. So many lovely and now cherished childhood memories are most fondly displayed and brought to light by your poem. Though I do not have the pleasure of having the gift as you do, the earliest memory of mine is a time when my Grandfather gave a little wind-up guitar to me. My Grandfather died before I was three years old. I can still see myself sitting on the backyard swing with him handing me that gift as clear as if it were just today. Well, your poetry certainly has gotten me off to reminiscing... Thank so much for sharing your lovely lovely poetry and most precious memories.

Betty, when I saw the title, my mind went immediately to Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz. I was pleasantly surprised by your wonderful story/poem. What a wonderful memory to still have with you today of something special from your grandfather.
He must have been a kind and loving man to see the look in a little girls eyes as she stared at her feet.

This should have been submitted for the book.  Hugs for peace, Marti

Marti:  I never thought about the ruby slippers of Oz, when I posted this poem, but I can see how it would bring that memory to mind.

My grandfather was a wonderful person and he died so hard.  He had cancer and in those days the doctors knew so little about
it. It's always been a sadness to me, that he suffered so much at the end of his life.

Thanks so much for your lovely comments.
