Brillant red, against blinding white.
Smoky gray seen in sparse patches.
The lone cardinal flashes bright,
As from the feeder, his food he snatches.

Perched upon snow-laden branches,
In command of all that he does survey.
Luminous eyes shine with Winter's trance,
At the close of one more day.

Patiently he awaits Spring's rebirth,
And the choosing of this year's bride.
Living for all he is worth,
On what nature does provide.

Drab brown against emerald green.
Branches covered in buds afresh.
The female cardinal stops to preen,
As she searches for a place to nest.

CHILI - oh, this is very nice indeed. We have cardinals visiting our birdfeeder too. They are so beautiful. Even the females have a subtle charm.   Chris

SPIRIT: To me, this is one of your finest and I could picture the entire scene. We don't have cardinals here, unfortunately, so I am watching Steller's jays, also a striking bird, of dark blue with a black head and crest. They also appear in the spring!
