CAFE REMEMBRANCES

How we loved that little cafe,
With its lace curtains
And gingham cloths.
I always felt that the booth
We chose to sit in,
Deep within the recesses
Of the small room
Was ours, and ours alone.
I even felt resentment
When I saw anyone else in it.
We started in friendship.
We played many games
Of checkers there,
To pass away rainy afternoons.
Over hot coffee
We discussed our dreams,
For the future.
Our heads always together,
Our thoughts in unison.
How intent we were,
Young and full of purpose.
Idealistic - strong,
Together we could,
We would change the world,
Solve all its problems.

Over plates of spaghetti,
Baskets of Italian bread,
Mellowed by
Wine and candlelight
We fell in love.
The cafe was
'Our little bit of heaven'.
We sat holding hands,
Holding hearts.
We were of single mind
Single thought,
And we knew
In all certainty that nothing,
Absolutely nothing,
Could separate us.

Yesterday, for old times' sake,
I returned
To that dear little cafe,
How I wish that I hadn't.
My memories,
Carefully preserved
Were ruined, destroyed,
Beyond all recognition.
The cafe was a dirty place,
The curtains torn,
Tablecloths spotted from
Food and coffee spills.
The booth,
Our very special booth,
Where all problems
Had ceased to be,
Had multi-colored tape
To cover the slits
In the seat and back.

For old times' sake
I ordered spaghetti,
But left it untouched,
It was cold and unfit to eat.
The wine was flat, stale,
And the loneliness
Of my soul echoed off
The unclean walls.

Funny, pathetically funny,
How things change,
So drastically when reality
Is no longer distorted
By the blinding light
Of love.

I be me BUT who does me be?

Spirit I love this one,  Yes I can see where that restaurant had been idealized in your memories, but oh how nice to have them.  My special with my first love was Blackburn's soda fountain where we shared ice cream sodas.
You'll find a poem about it somewhere in my files.  It's called The Summer of Our Early Acquaintance.

Yes it is Thursday and I have just come home from a full day.  I took five big arrangements and one miniature there and came home with three blues and three reds. It's fun but lots of work. One has to pack so carefully.  Joyce

SPIRIT:  This is so touching and believable!
I know how disillusioning it is to return to past haunts from happier times. Very good write.

What a lovely nostalgic penning~

And this ... this is to die for ....

'We sat holding hands,
Holding hearts.'
