Who Says I'm a Poet?

How dare I claim a poet to be?
I have no gold scripted, framed degree;
Nor right have I earned to be called peer
Of Frost, Longfellow or Will Shakespeare.

If I were a doctor or CPA,
I'd have a diploma that would say
My profession for all the world to know;
More solid proof than my own say so.

I really don't know all of the rules
Having not studied in poet schools.
I know not if I write right or wrong;
If with this fellowship I belong.

I'm aware that I rhyme pretty well.
Some poems have meter, I can tell.
Do they have some truth and clarity
Or a bit of singularity?

Until an editor clamors for
A poem of mine, requesting more,
I'll be a poet without degree;
With title that's been bestowed by me.

Well Joyce, I have always thought you are a wonderful poet. I have enjoyed reading your poetry, since I came to passions.

If you are not a poet then I am chopped liver - - I gotta tell I'm a lot of things but chopped liver isn't one of them. You are without a doubt A POET.

I, too, wonder constantly what gives me the right to write poetry. Nothing that I do satisfies me but if I could write like you, I'd just go around with "Poet" tatooed on my forehead. Thanks for sharing. Barb

who is to say what a poet is or should be. everyone is a critic. you are what you are. a person who writes from her heart. the words just happen to be beautiful.....

if that is what a poet is, then you are a poet.
