So fragile are the treasures of my heart
those precious things  I hold most dear
such pleasures constant as the sun
enrich my days, define my soul

Yet, how easily we forget sometimes
the value of these gifts we have
often cast aside by vapid acts
forgotten in a daily pointless rush

And then, too soon it seems, they’re lost
used up, gone, never to return
and questions flood the grieving mind
like locusts in a field of wheat

Did I not love or respect enough
those things I held in reverence
branded there in the deepest heart
the heart that aches for their return

These hands now tremble with the need
to hold them gently to my breast
to declare again I love you more
than I can ever say

But time is cruel to such as we
no second chance is ever gained
no bargain ever neatly struck
the cards are played but once you see

Be then content with the memories
remember all the happy times
be grateful for that which you have
for soon it too will fade to black.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Dear Pegasus, Indeed I think we are kindred spirits.  Every word in this poem struck home.  The most precious of things are indeed the most fragile and we must never hold them lightly.  I learn that daily.  Love, Joyce

Pegasus,

I just read Joyce's poem then came here to read yours. You two surely were on the same wavelength today. These poems spoke volumes to me and I enjoyed very much.

pegasus111:  A lovely, nostalgic poem. I guess we are all guilty of this very thing. Not realizing until it's too late, what we had and let slip away.

Dear Peg; How very true are your lovely poetic words...if only to go back with the wisdom we have now and love as tenderly as we wish we had.... Ellie
