To a Lost Brother

I packed up all your things today,
That I had carefully stowed away.
There wasn't very much to show
For one man's life and I don't know
If you are still alive or not!
It's been so long since I have sought
To find a trace of you somewhere.
You didn't keep in touch or share
The changes in your life, once we
Had both reached our maturity.

The war, which changed so many souls,
Gave each of us such different goals
And meetings became far and few,
Till I no longer heard from you.
Now, today, from out your past,
A daughter who has tracked at last,
This family tie to me and mine,
Has questions that I can't define!
There are no answers I can find.
Just give her what's been left behind.

Some letters, cards, mementoes too.
Old photographs of me and you,
When we were growing boys and teens.
My mind is filled with family scenes.
My heart is filled with such regrets!
Sometimes in life, The Master lets
Us glimpse vignettes that might have been.
This daughter you have never seen
Since she was just a little lass,
Now has two sons. The seasons pass!

This blank page in her history,
Has fueled her search and so I see,
It's time to pass these relics on.
I hope wherever you have gone,
You sometimes think of dad and mother
And of me, your lonely brother!

Since I know you're not a brother, I am safely assuming that this is not about a family situation of your own, but I know brothers do get lost.  Very well done, Betty.  Nice reading.  Joyce

Joyce:  No I am not a brother and I never had one, much to my chagrin!  This is however based on a true story!  Sad to say.
Thanks for reading and nice to hear from you.

This one made me somewhat teary-eyed. Lovely read. Thank you.

SPIRIT:  Thanks for reading and commenting. It's a sad story and it made me feel emotional to write it, but I wanted to do it for the man involved.

Betty,

This poem is very wonderfully written. Made me think of people I have known in my life. Thanks for writing this and sharing it.

This is a wonderful work.  It flows very well.  I hope you someday find your brother so he can once again be part of your family.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

pegasus111:  Thank you and though it is a sad story, there are so many that are sadder and more hopeless.  Good to see your comments.
