SEASHORE MEMORIES

The early morning beckoned us,
So we arose
To walk hand in hand,
Stride for stride,
Following the jagged coastline,
For one last time, together.
The waves thrashing
In high-spirited turbulence,
Echoed noisily,
Resounding from the gray skies
And ominous black clouds.
The sand was dark,
Cool and moist beneath our feet,
Yet not unpleasant,
As it squeezed itself between
The bareness of our toes.
We made no noise,
We didn't feel the need to talk.
We had always been
So comfortable with each other,
Even in silence,
This seemed like a special blessing,
Especially on this day.
The hard gusty winds
Stroked our faces,
None too tenderly,
But it was bearable
We did not complain.
Stopping,
We turned to face each other,
And kissed.
Our lips were salty
I never knew
If from sea or tears.
You held me close,
All we could hear was
The noisy, fast beat of our hearts,
I hung onto you,
I never wanted to leave you.
Selfishly, I would have
Claimed you forever,
Unfortunately our love,
Our relationship,
Was full of impossibilities.
We finally reached
The empty pier
And stood beneath it,
Quickly and in silence,
We kissed again,
Then again, but slowly,
Trying to prolong
This final good-bye.

Parting, you turned
Walked back from where
We had come,
And I carried on,
Wrapping myself
In a passing black cloud.

Soon the waters
Washed away our footprints,
And they were no longer,

AS WERE WE.

I am an enigma, even unto myself.
A puzzle unsolved, a mystery maybe until beyond death.  ©das

Thank you, I'm glad you can almost smell the sea means I achieved some of what I hoping to with this one.

I can picture the sand squeezing in the feet...the weather as well...I absolutely love this one. Each piece of your work is improving.

Maybe I am not praying...but I know...
You are always listening...to my soul...

Thanks. Maybe I am not improving though, I wrote this one possibly twenty years ago.
