The Winter Witch

The winter witch is hard to find,
But I see signs she's left behind.
Sparkling ice in crystal shards,
Covers bushes in the yards
And she stopped the creek's gay song,
That used to help the day along.
Now it's choked with ice and snow.
Quiet water runs below
And from the lake, great clouds of steam
Writhe and rise, while eagles scream
And plunge into the frosty air,
To see if fish are hidden there.
She freezes with her breath and touch
Plants that I enjoyed so much!

She sends cold winds to moan and howl.
Then you know she's on the prowl
And when the moon is dim, you see,
Foggy shapes, beneath each tree.
She coats the roads with slippery ice.
She really isn't very nice!
Just when we plan a trip, we know,
She'll surely send us heaps of snow!
She freezes pipes and cars won't start
And I don't think she has a heart.
The winter witch is wild and free,
Glorying in her mastery
Of furious storms and biting cold,
Of all the millions she can hold
Captive in her winter season
And she doesn't need a reason
To subject us to her ire,
Keeping us beside the fire.
Everywhere I look, she's here,
At the ending of the year!

Oh Betty, hooray, hooray for exposing this nasty witch. She's been to New England also and she's not welcome here either.

I just loved this and the following lines especially ...

"...And when the moon is dim, you see,
Foggy shapes, beneath each tree.
She coats the roads with slippery ice.
She really isn't very nice! ..."

Great poem ~~ a keeper.

Happy New Year to you and your family.
Hugs, Marti

Keith:  Thanks for commenting.  We saw this witch only briefly between Christmas and New Years.  Now it's in the 40's and the snow has all melted.  Never remember a January like this!
