The Christmas Trip

I remember the excitement,
As we planned our Christmas trip.
How I sat upon my suitcase,
So my dad could make it zip!
He tied the cases to the back
Of our nineteen-forty Ford,
With the biggest full of presents.
Then the family climbed on board.

We were headed to my grandmas,
About fifty miles away.
Looking forward to the visit
And the coming holiday.
Though the road was rough and bumpy,
We were happy as could be,
As we sang our favorite carols
And talked of grandma's tree.

Her ornaments were lovely.
They were also very old
And we enjoyed their history,
In the stories that she told.
Long after dark, when we arrived
And the table was all set,
The feast she put before us,
We would not soon forget.

Then afterwards, the men went out
To carry all the luggage in.
When they returned, we saw at once,
Their look of great chagrin.
The largest case had broken loose
And our presents were all lost.
It made us all feel very sad,
Not because of what they cost,
But the sweet anticipation
Of each persons joy to see
All the special gifts we'd chosen,
To place beneath the tree.

Grandma went to the piano
And some carols began to play.
When once we started singing,
It just chased our blues away.
For we were all together there.
Many blessings we could see.
Perhaps someone needed presents
For their Christmas, more than we!

How sad, Betty but what a lovely attitude.  A lovely memory of your grandma.  Love, Joyce

Joyce:  Thanks for responding.  It wasn't as sad as it sounds, as once we got over our initial disappointment, we had a wonderful Christmas even without presents. It was a good lesson, as we discovered they are a small part of what Christmas is!

Michelle:  Thanks a lot for your remarks. Strangely, or perhaps not, that Christmas has stuck in my memory as one of the best ever.

Christmas is about people and faith as you so aptly described here Betty. Well written my friend.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Betty, your family truly did get a small taste of the true meaning of Christmas it seems. We all are guilty of forgetting the greatest gift ever given and why we even celebrate that special day. So wonderful that your family was blessed with seeing all the other gifts of just being together.
Hugs,
Juls

Juls:  Thanks for reading and appreciate your remarks. This lesson learned at an early age, has enhanced each Christmas since.
