Leaving the Cliffs of Moher

Down winding ways, we traveled far
To where the Cliffs of Moher are
And standing there, above the sea,
We gazed upon infinity,
Knowing very soon we'd say
Goodbye to all and sail away,
Across this restless world of blue,
To shores where we could start anew.

Goodbye to Ireland, mother's arms.
To hills of green and elfin charms.
To everything we love and know,
But yet we must and so we'll go
And when the ship leaves on the tide,
I doubt that we can ever hide
The way our souls are torn in two,
As Ireland fades beyond our view!

Soaring Eagle:  Thanks for your response. My grandparents came from Ireland and I have heard so many stories about it and the pain of leaving.  Sometimes I feel compelled to write about it.

Joyce:  This is based on family stories of leaving Ireland for America, in my grandparents time.  Thanks for commenting.

Betty Lou,

My great-grandparents on both sides of my family came from Ireland in the late 1800's. I've often thought how courageous it was to leave all that you knew to travel across the ocean and start a brand new life. Of course, with the exception of the Native Americans, everyone's ancestors did that.

Some in my family have actually been able to travel to Ireland. Maybe someday I will too, who knows?! But in the meantime, I'll enjoy the lovely pictures! And the lovely poetry!

Beautifully done, Betty Lou!

Oh ... Oh ... Oh .....~
This is just the loveliest~
I also heard the beautiful stories of that part of my heritage ...~
You captured both the melancholy of leaving, and the apprehension of the newness of the land that lay beyond the journey~

My Grandpa said that our Native Indian blood was waiting here to greet our Irish ancestry~

Denise:  Thank you for your response and sounds as if we have a lot in common.  I can't imagine really, what it would be like to leave your homeland and travel across the ocean to an unknown place.  My family came to the States from Canada years ago and I remember what a traumatic thing it was for me, leaving all our relatives and friends , plus a lot of personal possessions that I treasured, being young.
I was so homesick the frist couple of years I was miswrable much of the time.  As I grew up, I began to love this country too!
It's a hard transition for anyone, I'm sure.

Betty, Two years ago, our son visited Ireland and his girlfriend who was doing a college semester abroad. The Cliffs were one of his most favorite spots. I have sent him this and I know he will enjoy it as much as I did.

One day I hope to visit there.  Hugs, Marti

Marti:  I just finished looking at the pictures you sent, for which I thank you again.  How wonderful it would be to visit Ireland and look for your roots.  I have always wanted to go too.  Doesn't look too encouraging at the moment, for making a trip like that, but I can dream! thanks for sharing!~

What a wonderfully beautiful poem, I have always wanted to go to Ireland. Your poem was so graphic it seemed I was there myself. I love it!

(smiles) Oh Betty, though most of my ancestry is Cherokee Indian, I also have Irish blood, and I am so blessed I got to see Ireland last summer, well, at least the southern and middle portions of the region! (kiss on cheek) Dingle Bay is one place you must visit if you haven't already, it is by far the single most beautiful region I've seen yet in the world, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Betty, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Noah:  All my mother's family was Irish. My father's French!  A lethal combination for tempers, but I like to think I have controlled mine! (LOL)

I have yet to see Ireland.  I have come close a couple of times and life has intervened! It's still a dream for the future!
