Listening to the Night

There's wind tonight and stealthy sound,
From twigs and dry leaves blowing round.
A strange excitement in the air
As if there's happenings out there
We've never seen, or likely will,
Unless the moon decides to spill
A flood of light, if clouds will part
Long enough to let her start
Illuminating field and tree
With brilliance, so I can see!

I stand beside the open door
To listen to the night once more.
The sighs and whispers seem to be
All sending messages to me,
But what they are, I cannot tell,
For they've disguised their voice too well.
I think that somewhere, years ago,
There was a time I used to know,
But from that place, I've come too far
To now remember what they are!

"Listening to the Night"---what an inviting title...and perfect for this wonderfully poetic expression!

I enjoyed this very much!--as I knew I would!

Joyce:  I'm sure you get those "whispering" night winds where you are too.  I seem to remember quite a few like that when we lived in Seattle.  Thanks for commenting.
