Author's Note: This is dedicated to all veterans not just Navy veterans, most importantly to my father and grandfather, whose path I now tread...

~ ~ ~ ~

Long Blue Line

As I tread the long and winding road.
Dusty, weary and feeling old.
I climb a steep and difficult hill.
Not without taking one or another spill.
When I reach the top of the peak.
I stand atop and take a peek.

I see how far I have come.
The third generation, that is quite a sum.
For I drew strength along the way.
From the long blue line that passed this way.
Pearl Harbor, Leyte Gulf, Guadalcanal.
Yankee Station, Mekong Delta, Rung Sat.
These are a few names where they shined.
Where many of them lived but others died.

They are my kin, my sense of pride.
Also their examples are my guide.
And when I feel I want to quit.
I see an old sailor, with shoes polished and spit.
His ulility blues are starched and creased.
Many like him have toiled and not ceased.
He extends to me a helping hand.
I take it and make my own stand.

For my segment of the long blue line.
It shall be made to shine.
The men before me.
Those ahead of me.
All shall form the Navy's long blue line.

- Thank the Veterans today if you know them.

Wonderful tribute, Paraboxer! My Dad was also in the Navy during WWII when he was 18.

We owe all the veterans a great debt indeed.

Wonderful and thanks to you too for your service.  My own grandpa was a Civil War Veteran and I had someone in every war since up to and including Viet Nam.  Joyce

paraboxer~
This is an excellent tribute to all the men and women,
young and old, who have served our country so well.
This touched me deeply.  Thank you for sharing it.

Very well written, eloquent and something that should be brought to mind more than it is.I had the privilege of playing for a V.F.A. ceremony and festival in my home town this past summer.I was really impressed and touched by speaking to these guys. They had vintage photos that were just incredible.
Needless to say,I am greatful for their sacrifice and courage. Thanks for sharing this.

This is just great!  People need to be reminded often, what the men in the military
give for the rest of us! I am married to one of them!
