Sister Sue and Halloween Too!

On Halloween when I went out,
To gather treats, we all would shout
And run around in costumed glee.
One year, my mother said to me:
"It's time you took your sister too."
There wasn't anything to do.
I had to take her or not go
And so I let my sister know
She had to keep up with my group.
Then off we went with merry whoop!

Several houses later on,
I noticed that her shape was gone.
I hurried back along my trail,
But it was all to no avail!
I wandered home and told my dad.
I knew that I'd done something bad.
"Go out and find your sister, Sue
And don't come back until you do!"
I called on every home I knew
That we had gone a-treating to.

Then in the very last, I found
Where sister Sue had gone to ground.
There in the kitchen, full of smiles,
That sly fox, Sue, had worked her wiles.
Her sack was full and on a plate,
Were remnants of the food she ate,
While she was waiting patiently,
For help to come and it was me!
I held her hand the whole long way
Back home, so she'd not get away!

My dad was glad to have her back.
He confiscated my treat sack
And sent me off with hanging head,
To finish Halloween in bed!

Oh how too bad for you.  We older sisters have to be the responsible ones and all they have to do is smile.  Joyce

Joyce:  I really deserved my punishment, as my sister was only 4 and I was 8, so I should have been more responsible! Neither one of us ever forgot it!

Soaring Eagle:  I imagine all sisters at 4 are somewhat of a trial for the older ones. I always wanted a brother!

what a sad halloween you had...but a delightful poem it inspired! Hugs, Ellie

ellie:  I deserved what I got for being so neglectful of my sister!  It sure taught me a memorable lesson.  Thanks.

SEA:  Thanks for commenting and glad you enjoyed this.  I have been in Horshoe Bend many times, as I used to travel between Nevada (Reno) and Coeur d'Alene and that was a favorite stop over.  Where I live it is much more mountainous and very beautiful with many lakes and foliage.  I love the desert type country too however.
