The Maple Leaf

One maple leaf among them all
Was first to change and last to fall
It clung to lifelines of a limb
And dangled freely in the wind

Plucked by the wisp of brisk new air
Assuring every twig was bare
It tumbled in the morning freeze
Into a whirl spun by the breeze

A maple leaf in crimson skirt
Then curtsied in a noticed flirt
And twirled in pleasure of it all
In winds that made it rise and fall

The splendor of the leaf entranced
My eyes that joined it in a dance
It’s lingering presence stirred my soul
As if to please, it’s only goal

Unable now to keep the pace
Of ballet turns and spins in space
It did one final pirouette
Then tumbled to the melting wet

Once more it rose as breezes grew
A thousand leaves of beauty flew
But one leaf stayed within my eye
Until it waved and said good-bye

Dear Liz:  I was thinking about you today and that it was far too long since I'd read a poem of yours.  Then here you are tonight.
Outstanding work!
