Sweet tender years
why didst thou depart
thy kind caress
fed this lonely life
thy soft kisses
warmed the soul
enlightened the dark

Oh special time, no other
matched thy gentle grace
thy song filled the heart
with unmatched love
each day a precious jewel
more lovely than the last

The days are empty now
this hunger for thee
gnaws at the fiber
of this dull existance
unfulfilled it cries
for thy glorious return
though it be a moment

A moment dearly treasured
revered for it’s purity
grateful for the touch
of time now long past
but never forgotton
nay, remembered with the
deepest love from the heart

Sweet tender years
glorious memory of thee
lives on in twilight
a beacon that sustains
this weary traveler
on the dim road that
ends in thy arms forever.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

This is a beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing. I often wish for the time in life where all was perceived as good, untainted by life's lessons.

dear pegasus,
terrific poem.  especially:

"Oh special time, no other
matched thy gentle grace
thy song filled the heart
with unmatched love
each day a precious jewel
more lovely than the last"

i love how this stanza stands apart, which makes the sorrow in the other stanzas more powerful.
Annie!

"Oh, do not ask, 'What is it?'
Let us go and make our visit."

Peg, this is a magnificent ode to lost youth...but yet we are all the wiser for it..Ellie

A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails.

I'm glad I have my youthful memories because I certainly wouldn't want to have to relive them.
Enjoyed the read. Thanks,
Melton

pegasus111:  A lovely write!  My own youth was not a happy time for me, so I have cherished memories of a later time in life.
Nice that your young years meant so much to you.
