Here--if list be poetry
the contents--a phrontistery--
the stuff that has no where to be,
stuff I need...apparently.

There are several dried out pens--
a phone cord without prong for "in"--
empty matchbook kept--adored--
I had a good time at that bar.

Birthday candles, lit but once,
and batteries without an ounce
of pump of juice to make ya jump--
try it--stick it on yer tongue.

Decks of cards (none of them full)
blue thread ragged on a spool
my doggy's collar (doggy died)
I couldn't throw it out--I tried.

Copper pennies, pricking tacks,
so much plentiful of lack...
business cards and what-is-this?
Who's girlish hand signed with a kiss?

Oh. I blush. That was for me.
That one is sweet Tiffany.
Tablets to dye Easter eggs--
loose ends of the plans we made...

Pictures of our friends in dust.
Really. I am embarrassed.
I'll wipe them off for album's trust.
And what is this? Is this bread crust?

Fuses (we've a breaker box)
and oh-how-sweet a baby sock!
Warranties and keys for locks
to keep things safe we long forgot.

As I dig, remember more,
forgetting what I came here for...
I think that life is just like this.
A drawerful of love, misfit.

I love this. And like Joyce, I have more than one. Gosh I've even had whole junk rooms. This is just great! Anyone can relate, well unless you are a neat freak, which I am NOT!

(My reputation precedes me?) "thank you" Hey WhiteRose--have a drink on me! thanks for reading...and j? I'm giggling here...you ever see someone with an organized junk drawer? I DID...scared the b'jeebers outta me!!!

Giggles...and thanks. I do hope I have time to come back to play later! (But keep the darts away from me, I'm dangerous!) sigh...it's been SO long since I've been "out"---WAH..."But I don't WANNA go home..."

dear serenity,
oh yes, "As I dig, remember more,
forgetting what I came here for..."  i do that all the time!  junk drawers are like a time capsule to one's own life.  nice work, love.

Finally...a poem that only a Packrat could love!(teasing...teasing)I think it's a hoot,
I had 2 pens dry up on me the past 3 days and the head of my phone cord broke today...
oh,well.I really love it when someone writes
about the over-looked stuff and uses
words that increase my vocab.Very well written and unique.

Thanks for sharing,Serenity

Good one. I may take a peek of my own drawer for a glance of the misfit memories that I just can’t throw away.

Thanks,

Sen,
I like the humor and the lost chances,
tugging for space with bread crust.

Thanks again for reading...my junk.

Sometimes poetry (especially mine--grin) is like that---doesn't mean much to anyone but me, but I am glad to know that so many could relate to this--the family thought me nuts, once again.

There I was, with the drawer removed from the kitchen counter, at my feet and writing--
"What ARE ya doing?" *shrug* "Writing."

smile.

Thanks for understanding this space cadet.

haha Delightful read. My motto is: Throw it out ... after a while.

I guess one becomes content with one’s poetry when one opens the book ten years hence and does NOT exclaim, “Did I really write this?”

Really enjoyed this poem, it is one that many can relate to, so many little objects that bring back so many memories someday when we are dead and gone someone will say "Why in the world did she save that?"

Absolutely adorable poem, and some do have "organized" junk drawers, but perhaps won't from now on.

Pack rats?  Can you imagine, I am one and I'm marrying one ...

We don't have a junk drawer - we have a junk room.  After 4 years I'm still in the process of adding more cabinetry to hold all this stuff.

Boxes and boxes of sports cards, years of computer software, photographs, letters and poetry - and books!  Oh, lots of books.  CDs, videotapes, DVDs, 3 computers and the guts of at least 2 more ... arts and crafts supplies, old sketchbooks, a set of dumbbells (not to be confused with the pair of dumbbells who live here), stacks of spiral notebooks and 3-ring binders containing reams of who-knows-what, trophies from Michael's BMX glory days, dice and miniatures from my tabletop gaming days, at least one box of comic books, various oddball kitchen appliances that I got for Christmas and never bothered to take out of the box (you shouldn't have ... no REALLY ...), a cabinet full of paperwork from Michael's old home business, a pillow so thickly covered with cat fur that I fear to clean it lest I clog the vacuum (or accidentally suck up the cat), Michael's grandmother's stamp collection, haphazard stacks of old pay stubs, two Victorian fairy statues, a prayer stick, a leather bullwhip, packets of parmesan cheese and crushed peppers from our last pizza order (which was at least a month ago, now) ...

Yikes.

Problem is I don't have any room to put everything, so when I clean in here, it just gets rearranged ... since I can't have "neat and orderly" I go for "visually interesting."

I confess it startled me to see this pop yesterday, as I'm STILL grappling with collective junk since we moved over the summer. (I actually went hunting for a story I told once regarding my pack rat husband, and his "lucky bean collection")

But thanks for taking the time to read my "silliness". I guess there are some things that are universal, junk drawers being just one of 'em.

Love to all, with my gratitude.
