At Nepenthe

At the edge of a deep
     Verdant crevasse
The hissing ocean so far below
     Barely seen this morning
Through the fog

Cool gentle breeze, and
     Green strands among blue waves
Of the pacific, sea of forgetfulness
     Calming spirit and mind
As you sit waiting

Pale rays of gold
     The sun from your left
Warms your arm and lights
     This contented respite
On your journey south

Sailing through the mist
     Wings teetering, acute dihedrals
Vultures float like seraphim
     Two hundred feet beneath
Your outdoor table, where

You eat your nine dollar hamburger
And quaff o’ quaff this diet coke
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Annie:-

"Oh, do not ask, 'What is it?'
Let us go and make our visit."

Annika, you have a great sense of "where you are" in all that I've read.

Lovely vultures, really!

In reply to "which way do we go?", the answer was never "straight", but, "progressively forward".

y'all would enjoy this place.  its in big sur on highway one, a beautiful scenic route along the california coast, if you ever make it out there.  hamburgers are way too expensive, but they got a neat gift shop.

Annie:  This is very descriptive!  I really enjoyed it and I love the sea and anything about it.

Oh gosh, is Nepenthe the name of a place? I must admit, I read the title and considered that this might be a very short poem indeed, given the efficacious nature of the drug. haha Although, I think the drug is commonly spelt nepenthes though eithr spelling id acceptable. Silly me.

Great read. Thanks for sharing and waking me up. hehe

I guess one becomes content with one’s poetry when one opens the book ten years hence and does NOT exclaim, “Did I really write this?”

Ah yes, Big Sur.
I've seen pictures, but never been.
Never been too far up PCH, actually.
After reading this poem,
that will have to change.

(I like that you compare vultures
with seraphim --
wow)

Hi!
Actually, Paddy, Nepenthe is the name of a restaurant on PCH.  I was unaware of the different spellings, but i used the sp. that the restaurant and Poe used.  bsquirrel, vultures have always meant good luck for me.  in california, we have only one species, (well there's also a handful of condor too, recently returned to the wild)  the turkey vulture.  the male is gorgeous with a featherless bright red head.

Annie!

A.L.Becker

Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't trying to suggest that you had misspelled it, simply that the unusual spelling caused me some confusion, so I read on and noted your message that informed me that it was a place.
