In the Early Days of Autumn

In the early days of autumn,
When the leaves have barely turned
And the smoke drifts through the valleys,
From the fields that have been burned,
I find that I am restless
And I'd really like to go
To someplace that's exciting,
Till I have to face the snow.
But it's not a time for leaving
And my duty is quite clear.
Many autumn chores are waiting
Before winter comes this year!

In the early days of autumn,
There's a scent upon the air
That coaxes me to wander,
For the woods are cool and fair.
The squirrels are storing pine cones
And the birds are moving on
To start their southward journey,
While they sing their farewell song!

lovely Betty. I love the fall season.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Marge:  Thanks and I appreciate your comments and the invitation to fly south with the birds. If I only could!! That "no snow" comment is very appealing!

Trillium---The Trillium is the provincial flower of Ontario---I love them, they are so pure and fresh---just like your writing. I may be flattering myself, but as I read your words they rang so true to me, that I felt I was hearing my own heart speaking.

Linda:  Thank you for your lovely response to this poem.  I knew the trillium was the flower of Ontario, as I am also a Canadian.
Born in Alberta however.  Here where I now live in Northern Idaho, we have trilliums growing in our woods.

A. L. Becker:  Thanks for commenting.  Where I live in Northern Idaho, it is very beautiful allyear round.  Autumn is my favorite season and winter my least favorite. I do not like snow and ice!

You most certainly have the talent of provoking the mind to see the picture your poem has painted. I loved it.

Harmony:  Thank you!  Where we live, you can almost tell when it's autumn by the scent of the air.  There's usually smoke in it and drying foliage.  Neat smell!

Betty, this is beautiful and we in NE can smell that scent also.

The two mockingbirds that have been with me all summer are still here, but will be leaving shortly. I will miss them.

Beautifully sunny days and cooler nights. Nothing quite like Autumn.

Dear Marti:

We have had rain since the middle of August, with very few days break. Our humming birds all left early this year.
Most of our summer birds are gone here and the winter ones are slowly appearing. Don't think we will have much of an autumn this year.

Thanks for reading!
