Black Bears in the Berries

We took our berry buckets
And we headed out of town.
The weather was delightful,
So we rolled the windows down
And it was so relaxing.
We had nothing on our mind,
But the sweet anticipation
Of the berries we would find.

The berry patch lay scattered
All along a bushy hill,
So all of us got busy.
Soon our pails began to fill.
I heard my young son talking
To somebody out of sight.
I moved so I could see them,
Then I froze in shock and fright!

Two bears as black as midnight,
About thirty feet apart,
Were gorging on ripe berries
And struck terror to my heart.
I moved my son back slowly,
Until bushes made a screen
And then we made the quickest
Retreat you've ever seen!

When we reached our car I cried
In voice so loud and clear:
"There's black bears in the berries
And we're getting out of here!"

Joyce:  Thanks for your comments and it was rather scary, but fortunately the bears were more interested in the berries than they were in us!

Good poem and while I'm sure it was indeed a scary time, it really goes to show you never know what berries will draw in. I trust no one was hurt in the ordeal.

Anonymity:  Thanks for commenting. No one was hurt!  the bears were so busy eating, they really paid little attention to anything around them.

pegasus111:  Thanks for saying that!  I have had a couple of close encounters with bears since this incident and they really do scare me!
