Yukon

Along a ridge of barren ground,
Gyrfalcon fly, without a sound,
Hunting for the ptarmigan
Who've breeded here since time began,
Then rise to climb and finally soar
Above the lightly timbered floor
Of a valley, old and wide,
Where red fox run and lemmings hide.

It is a slice of ancient land.
A river cuts a twisting band
Of churning water, blue and green,
With wild rapids in between.
The Dall sheep hug the cliffs and stare
Into the golden eagle's lair.
They build their nests and raise their chicks
On an unruly pile of sticks.

It is a place where grizzlies roam
And where muskoxen find a home.
The caribou in multitudes,
Eat abundant, favorite foods.
It's solitude is still unchanged
From early times, when Indians ranged
Across it's vastness, so today,
We hope that it remains this way!

A wonderful piece Betty. I love your description of the raw and untamed land. Let us hope it will always be with us.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

pegasus111:  That is my hope also. These true wilderness areas are disappearing so fast. Thanks!

Thanks for opening another window to a beautiful land I hope we don’t forget. I like the way you describe nature.

Melton:  Thanks for your nice comments. I too hope we leave some of these wilderness areas as they are.

Joyce:  Thanks for commenting.  I wondered why I hadn't seen your remarks the last few days.  Hope it was a pleasurable thing, to get away.
