Sun-Dried Clothes

The clothes hung on the line to dry,
All look as if they'd like to fly.
All the sleeves on shirts are flapping
And the dresses, crisply snapping.
The sheets are billowing and float
Like sails upon an anchored boat.
When I was young, I liked to play
Beneath the lines on washing day.
Where every towel, held fast in place,
Would reach for me with wet embrace
And I would run, with arms stretched wide,
Just touching clothes on either side.

When it was time to bring them in,
As I unclasped each woodin pin,
Into the pile, I'd press my nose
To smell the scent of sun-dried clothes.
Whenever washing day was planned,
I was supposed to lend a hand
And though I sorted, I recall,
That didn't take much time at all,
So I was free to rush among,
The fresh washed clothes, as they were hung.
Now I can easily recall
What fun that seemed, when I was small.

You are a child at heart Betty, so you can recall the sensation of being young.  I loved that clean smell of sun-dried clothes.  Joyce

Thanks Joyce!  I still hang sheets out once in awhile, just so we can enjoy that wonderful fresh scent.

I remember this so well. Thank you for the trip dowm memory lane. It was many years before we were able to afford a dryer and although it is more convenient, I miss the smell of sun dried clothes.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Trillium, this poem is so intriguing, even from one look at the title.  To me, it also expressed the joy of washing clothes, that in the end come out clean and smell really good!

Betty,
This sure brought back some memories! I can hear the sheets flapping in the wind. I used to hang my clothes on the line.(before I became spoiled).
I miss the smell of fresh line dried clothes, but don't think I can part with the dryer!
Thanks for the memories, good poem!

Deb

Deb:  Thanks for commenting.  I recently had to hang clothes outside as my dryer quit working and it brought back lots of nice memories.  However, the minute the dryer was repaired, I took the clothesline down! (LOL)
