"Pepper-Pot"

It's just a one-room school house,
But my friends and I, today,
Will go and gather flowers
That will make it sweet and gay.
Our teacher's getting married
And we all want her to know,
We think she's very special
And we're going to miss her so!

She's tiny and she's charming,
But her temper is quite hot!
In fact, among ourselves now,
We call her "Pepper-Pot".
I you mind your A,B,C's,
And you sit up straight and tall,
You never have to worry
That she'll make you face the wall!

The boys are mostly bigger
Than she is, by quite a ways.
I wonder how she gets them
To do just as she says?
She isn't too much older
Than her students, I suspect,
But she has strength and wisdom
That has won her our respect.

We have seen her wedding gown.
Silk and lace and palest pink.
There's no doubt that she will be
Like an angel bride I think.
The man she's due to marry,
Says he loves her such a lot,
But how our lives will suffer,
When we lose our "Pepper-Pot"

Betty, being a city boy, I missed the flavor of the country schoolhouse but, you describe it so well. As a teacher for more than 30 years, I appreciate your description of the classroom more than you know. thank you for bringing back the memories.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Joyce:  Thanks for missing me.  I've been in kind of a slump as far as my writing goes. Of course I've had company twice in the last month too and that throws the routine out the window.

pegasus111:  Thanks for commenting. You must have lots of fond memories of teaching for all those years.  I wrote this poem about my maternal grandmother, who started teaching at 15 in a one-room school house in Illinois.  She was very gifted and spoke Latin and French.  She also was a poet of merit.  Far better than I will ever be I'm afraid.  But, boy, did she have a temper!!
