Frankenhero

Rot gut wine bottle scrapes
makes tiny grinding noise
as lifted to ruined lips.
Clunks with a clink
returned to rest
lightened by some.

He tugs filthy fatigues
abit closer to home
seems like forever, then more.
Been wearing government green
since summer of 1968
boy forced to be a man.

High school hero
cocky kid, had it all
enlisted to win the war.
In-country;buddies in the bag
kids face down; so far from home
hero turned to stone junkie.

Highly decorated, wannabe lifer
to reluctant and short-time addict
choppers beat on, and on, and on.
Home to open hatred
no welcome, just hostility
jobs suddenly all filled.

Drifted down, spirled on down
town to town; women, wine, jail
back to black tar friend.
Thirty years a bushman
sitting downtown in concret jungle
nursing charity wine.

Dead in the eyes, and worse
no hope, no life, no thing
just breathing...waiting.
Yesterday here same as today
doing downtown jungle time
choppers going on, and on, and on.

Where did we go wrong, America
where did we drop the ball
where did we fail our fallen hero?
Richest country in the whole, wide world
here is our warrior, America...
this person we created.

This is a soul searching poem.  We should all feel shame.  Well done.  Joyce

This brings back memories I'd like to forget but it is impossible. Too many scars. Well done tramp.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Well done, indeed, Daniel. Very sad tale, true of way too many from our generation.

This is sad-but possessing a lot of truth & reality, we need to rethink!

indeed we do need to rethink and i believe
take steps to recognize our own responsibility
for these "Franken-heros"
I saw a thing on one of the news pages the
other day that said...get a life, get involved...volunteer for one meal a week at your local soup kitchen...would go a long way to prevent us from sliding our eyes off
these folks like they didn't exist and change our behavior to one that recognized them and maybe (shock) made friends with a few. Like the tagger line we saw on a ministry bus once..."Have you hugged your hobo today?"  Once one gets past all the unpleasantness; it will be a most rewarding experience!
...end of line:retract soapbox.
