Conversations With A Muse (Recognition)

We were sitting quietly in the garden and I could tell she had
something on her mind. She had that,’I want to ask you something
but I don’t know how to put it’, look on her lovely face.

Finally she spoke, so softly that I could barely hear her.

“Why do you go into that place”?

“What place,” I replied although I knew exactly ‘what place’ she
was referring to.

“The Corner Pub place.” She looked rather uncomfortable now and I
must admit, I was enjoying it. The sandal was now on the other
foot.

“I have friends there,” I said.

“But,”  and she hesitated again.

“But what?”

“Well, there are so few there and hardly anyone reads your work.
It seems a waste.”

“You don’t know people are not reading my work. Maybe they just
don’t reply,” I countered. “Anyway, the people who do reply are
my friends and I am content with that.”

“You settle for so little and there is so much more you could do
to get recognition,” she persisted. ( As most women tend to do )

“But I don’t seek recognition. It would not matter if no one read
my work. That is not important to me. What is important is that I
do write for my own satisfaction. I have a lot to say and only a
short time to say it. After all, I am not a salesman am I?”

She sighed. “No, I suppose not. You are a poet.”

“Yes I am. Whether a good or bad poet is not the issue, so
recognition is irrelevant.”

“I know,” she said, “but I want so much more for you.”

Rising, I walked over to her and placed a light kiss on her
forehead. “And that is why I am happy that you are my Muse.”

I left her there then. Still sitting on her favorite rock.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

pegasus111:  This is utterly charming! I know how you feel.  For most of my life, I wrote and put it all in drawers.  Only been in the lst few years I've felt brave enough to put it out where people could actually read it and "comment"  At first I was so afraid of criticism and rejection, as each piece meant something special to me. Now I enjoy sharing with those who do respond and hope that those who don't are still feeling "something"!  Excellent write!

So true.. I believe it is the sharing that is so important.. as we read we find we are not alone with our feelings and thoughts.. we are all apart of the human race.  I appreciate your words although I do not always comment and I in turn do not feel offended when I don't have a trail of comments after my written thoughts.. Keep writing.. and keep the muse.

So tender, and sweetly rendered, I feel like I stumbled in on a private converstion.

Pegasus,
You have spoken the heart of many a poet. and I look forward to reading your works.  For the poetry brought forth by any will enrich the lives of those whom read.
