Providence

Daddy farmed in North Dakota for many, many years,
Where the tribulations could drive a lesser man to tears.
My daddy worked with Nature when he tilled his fields of grain.
He knew of Earth's fragility and never caused her pain.
No chemicals or poisons were scattered upon his fields.
It was the whims of Nature that dictated yearly yields.
If spring rains were generous he was sure of good return.
The year that rains refused to fall, crops would dry up and burn.
In those sad years, for some, the living was very, very lean.
With Daddy's homegrown produce we could eat like kings and queens.
My daddy was an expert at making a garden grow.
There was no tenacious weed that would not fall beneath his hoe.
We had nutritious food from Daddy's intensive labor.
We ate well in those bad years, with food left for our neighbor.

What an admirable and splendid tribute, Joyce!
How things have changed -- and not always for the better.
This brings a wistful sigh...

How beautiful, Joyce, are your tender memories of a gifted and loving father. This poem is so lovely! Hugs, Ellie

Joyce:  I'm so glad I got to read this poem about your father.  Farmers are artists in their own way don't you think? Such a hard life but the rewards are many.  Great poem.

I really like this one Joyce. So often children fail to appreciate the sacrifices their parents make to improve the lives of their offspring. I am glad that you are not among them. Hugs.

And to think I thought you were going to write about a city in Rhode Island
Well done, indeed!

What a great tribute to your dad and his lifetime quest.  Such a devotion does indeed take a special person... Nicely done, JJ..
