The years have worn his features thin;
he's hunched upon the weathered bench,
ignoring winds and sea-lashed spray.
A chill begins to glaze his bones.

His frail-edged thoughts retreat to days
when children's laughter pebbled through
warm-scented pathways of his life.
A trembling sigh escapes his lips.

He drained their love to fuel his climb;
he strode across chrome-powered peaks
on shreds of crayoned Daddy-hugs
and all the moments in between.

He knows the final tally's taken,
hears the tread of vacancy.
He sees a solemn finger beckon
past the furthest shade of grey.
