One Step at a Time

Tell me not in frightful numbers
Horrible troubles in the world,
Lest I must cover up my ears,
Cowering with my body curled.

Let me ease my load a little
Let me unload some of my pack.
If I rid myself of pressure
It will relax my aching back.

Then I'll turn unto my neighbor
Take on his problems as my own.
For all burdens will be lighter,
If we don't carry them alone.

Do not think I am uncaring
If I turn from the world's sad news.
Do not judge me as a slacker
Until you've walked in my tight shoes.

I'll take care of my own corner,
I'll try to do my very best.
If I aid my next door neighbor,
Together we can help the rest.
