Song of the Cherokee

Under a full but lonely moon,
I hear a sweet and plaintive tune.
A flute is being played nearby.
The music rises to the sky
And also to the waiting ear
Of an Indian maiden standing near.

The young man listens to his heart
And once he makes the music start,
He pours his feelings into song.
He thinks about her all day long
And even when he's riding out,
Upon a hunt, she's still about.

Within his mind, he talks to her
Almost as if she really were
Already his and waiting for
Him to come riding to their door.
She hears him and she knows that she
Must soon be answering his plea.

He'll bring sleek horses for her hand.
Her father looks and understands.
He knows her feelings, wants what's best,
So puts their anxious hearts to rest.
He lets them know his daughter can
Spend her liftetime with this man.

Ahhhhh..A look at the real America, mostly gone now, but certainly not forgotten. Such sweet emotions here. Great write.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

pegasus111:  Thanks for commenting.  I have been reading a lot lately about the Cherokee and their culture.  There was so much to admire about it.
