A Prairie Vagabond

In a humble, one roomed soddy,
My childhood days I knew,
Where I learned to love the prairie
And mornings fresh with dew.
How the birds would dart and warble
In morning's pearly light.
They filled the air with beauty,
In song and in their flight
And I learned to ride the ponies,
Like Indian children do.
Horizons always beckoned me
To come explore the view.
I loved those days of wandering.
The memories are fond.
A part of me will always be
A prairie vagabond.

Betty Lou Hebert

"soddy" is a slang expression for sod house. The pioneers made their houses out of blocks of sod on the prairie.

Published in Muse Magazine 1989 and in The Lyric 2000

what a delightful little piece. you paint such lovely pictures of the southwest

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost
