I sent my poem in, not expecting
to win a prize, but thinking I might get
a critique or even a bit of
encouragement.

I didn't win of course, but I received
a book of the winning poetry.  The
book's cover was sleek with a picture of
an oversized plant with blobs of white paint
representing clouds.

There was a building too, a crudely drawn
picture of an outhouse.  Six dollars if
I were to buy the book.  I opened it
to a short poem and read it and then I
read it again.

It made me uneasy as though it had
been written in an unfamiliar language.
It was not a poem to read aloud
to my children.  There were words that I would
blush to have them hear from my lips.  I turned
a page.  More confusion.

It has been a long time since I went to
school and studied literature. Back then
poetry was called the "Language of Romance".

Perhaps I should sign up for night classes.

Joyce~
Thank goodness your entry was NOT chosen
for inclusion in that book~
Sometimes 'rejection' is a good thing, huh ?

I recently decided to not participate in the publication of an anthology of poetry because I previewed all of the poems that were to be included and KNEW I didn't want to be part of something I'd be ashamed to have my family and friends read~
Haven't regretted it one little bit~

Thank you Marge  It truly is unbelievable what is considered first rate poetry and prose, these days.  Love, Joyce

Sounds like you made the right choice...your poetry deserves a book all it's own! Hugs, Ellie

Joyce:  Bravo!  You're work is too fine to be cheapened by vulgarity!

Joyce..I to have experienced this situation. Further, I used to post at a few other sites but withdrew because some of the stuff written there really offended me.That's what I like about the pub.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Being rejected by them was a blessing, for sure, Joyce!

a poem that tells a story. those are perhaps my favorite kinds. remember, rejection is only rejection if you respect the publication, and even then...it should be called 'a learning experience' however corny it sounds. again, i liked this very much.
