Into the Dark Unknown

Deep in the hills, I came upon
A cave mouth like a gaping yawn.
I ventured near and there I saw,
Just inside the open maw,
A set of footprints on the floor,
Where someone else walked in before.

It gave me pause. I looked about.
The steps went in, did not come out.
I called into the velvet dark.
There was no sound, nor yet a spark,
To show that anyone was there.
Just puffs of cool and fetid air.

But someone was ahead, inside.
I let discretion be my guide.
I backed away and turned around.
I'd show someone this place I'd found
And check with spelunkers to see
If they knew who this soul might be.

Who braved this labyrinth alone,
To travel in the dark unknown?
There are old tales that often tell
Of fearsome trolls who used to dwell
In places such as this. Some may
Still be surviving till today!

That is a foolish thought I know.
The dangers that are found below,
Are very real and multiply
When there is no one else nearby.
Who knows what lurks in caverns, deep,
Where countless ages lie asleep?

oh my. I agree with Marge. The last two lines are awesome.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Joyce:  You're right!  A dark, deep cave is no place to go alone. At least I'm not brave enough for that, although I know people who are.
