What color is the heart abandoned
left to wither like thirsty wheat
is it red as the bloody morning sun
before the furious storm
or dark as midnight indigo
in a black and starless sky

does it beat in a steady rhythm
or sputter in irregular cadence
the reflection of a wounded soul

do the tears flow in perpetuity or
does the madness of spirit finally end
slowly receding into a murky past
buried with the ghosts of unkind memories
a dull nagging ache impossible to forget

these questions are thrown into the wind
wrenched from lips cracked with sorrow
but the merciless wind does not answer

it never does

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Peg; This Hauntingly lovely poem of heartache and malancholia is exquisite writing! When the depths of sorrow become this bottomless, there is nowhere left to go but towards the light, where the rainbow, inevitably, will be found.....and God's Love!

A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails.

Tough read, full of dispair and abandonment.  I ache when reading it.

This is a heartfelt poem, written by one who knows whereof he speaks.  Perhaps one has to suffer to write such exquisite phrases.  Joyce

The winds of adversity can hurt and do seem to be indifferent, but through it all we can choose to have faith and believe that there is good in life and it sometimes comes from things the eye cannot see.
