Cave Paintings

I wonder how it was to be
A person of antiquity,
Who clothed themselves in skins and found
Dim caves to live in all year round
And did they on some winter night,
Illumined by the firelight,
Start painting on their walls of stone
With charcoal and some bits of bone?

Their art work, for the years to find,
Has left a history behind,
Of all the animals and birds
They there recorded without words.
I wonder if they dreamed when they
Were making handprints that someday
Many would travel far to see
All this marvelous imagery?

These haunting relics of the past,
So crudely made, were meant to last!

This is a wonderful poem about cave painting art.  I have always been fascinated  by the fact that these people had the talent to leave their history behind in this manner.  Joyce

very clever piece..yes, I often wonder too.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Very good, Betty Lou! Yep, they left a piece of themselves behind for future folks to find!

Joyce:  Thank you!  Glad you liked the poem. I have seen petroglyphs in Southern Idaho and also in Nevada and marvelled that they are still so legible after so much time. Never have seen cave paintings except in pictures, but I'd certainly like to!

This is very good... makes me think of all the History passed down by paintings and stories told to the children... How written hisory was written by the powers that be at the time... not the uneducated everyday people that made the land....  ??? love it

           Thank You

Very good poem. I don't think I have read one quite that interesting, and well written about cave dwellers.
