Listening to every heart

Fifty Christmases More

In days gone by ‘twas inspired
to write “Fifty Christmases More”
to think of you each holiday
coming to my door.

It was only but a title
and really nothing more
but to write a simple verse of
rhyme based on fact, or lore.

Something puts something off
the timing, perhaps, not right
then I received an E from you
and tears fell late last night.

You are years younger than I
so now is not your time
to tell me of this disease and
that which would take ‘way mine.

Through the years we’ve gone our ways
I’ve lived my life; you, yours,
but still dear brother of my heart
of my love be assured.

Perhaps it’s wrong to write it out,
this pain of here and now,
but for you to know my heart
and how I cope with vows.

I vowed my parents to care
for you and my sister dear,
so fear not when I say with heart
I’ll always be right here.

Perhaps we’ll not see fifty more
Christmas holidays
but while we have the time to share
I send my love your way.

You really tugged at my heartstrings with this one.  My brother, Dennis, recently had cancer tests which luckily were negative, but I tell you it scared the tar out of me.
Thanks for sharing this with us.

Dear Sunshine.  This was so touching.  I pray that all goes well and that you have a blessed Christmas season.  I am holding tight to my one surviving brother.  Four of them have gone on before me.  We don't know from one day to the next do we?  Love, Joyce

What a painful poem for you to have to write. I hope that sharing it with your friends here, helped in a small way.  I'm sure many people will now be praying for you and your brother.

I hope things work out well with you and your brother. It is not wrong to write of your feeling. I find comfort writing and sharing and I'm sure your brother does too.

BTW- it was a fine poem.

Thank you all for your lovely thoughts and well-wishes.  My brother's health is in his hands, all I can do is love him, and give him my prayers...
