Queen of the Night

Pale, fragile flowers, doomed to bloom
In shadowed hours.  Your perfume
Adorns the night, but few can see
Your white and perfect symmetry
And do the stars lean close to spy
Upon the washes where you lie?
And does the moon rise early too
So she can spend more time with you?
Then as she lights your glowing face,
Does she desire to take your place?
You are too tender for the sun,
So with each night of glory done,
You slowly fold your petals so
Your fragrant lovliness won't show.
Until night's mantle starts to creep
Across the sands, you stand asleep.

This is very lovely.  I do not have any night blooming flowers.  Is this a native plant?  Joyce

Joyce:  This plant belongs to the cactus family and is found in Arizona, Texas and Mexico.  Possibly other southern states as well.  It is also known as Night Blooming
Cereus.  Thanks for you comments.

I love this poem. Being a flower lover, the name Trillium is delightful. Your poem captures the essence of the fragile night bloomers, both in imagery and rhythym. I remember the night blooming jasmines, and I remember a desert night bloomer, too. Thanks for the sweet scented memories.

Betty; This reads like the flower you right of...pure, light and so lovely! I just saw some photos and read and article in the daily paper about these beauties, and they are magnificent!  Love, Ellie

A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails.

After reading this magnificent poem and then the tribute by Midnitesun I seemed to smell a sweet unimaginal scent-and as quickly as it came, it went

"Always be yourself, but the best self you can be."
