Phantoms of the Fort

I can hear their voices speaking,
But the sound is muted so,
I cannot capture any word
That was said here long ago.

I can hear their horses whinny
And a jingling harness tune
And the laughter of the troopers,
As they crowded the saloon.

I can see the old parade ground.
Hear the drum of marching feet,
As the soldiers drilled and sweated
In the dusty, desert heat.

There's a lonely voice that's singing
In the twilight's purple haze.
Someone dreaming of a loved one
And the glow of yesterdays.

Nothing left here now but silence
And these crumbling, 'dobe walls
And the hills cast brooding shadows,
While a mournful coyote calls!

Liz:  It is a sort of ghost town. We visited what remains of Fort Churchill, Nevada  awhile back and it certainly does feel haunted.

Very beautiful and let me tell you ... I grew up next to an Army Barracks that only a few years ago, closed down.
Much has been knocked down and all that's left, stands silent.
I remember the parades, marching, bagpipes ... all gone
Thanks for the memories

Rex:  Thanks for commenting on this poem.  I appreciate it.A fort or barracks is a strange place when everyone's gone. It always seems like you can hear something from the past.
