Defense Lawyer smiles
Having planted seed of doubt
Jurors look perplexed

Prosecutor sighs
Seeing reasonable doubt
In the jury's eyes

Judge gives instructions
Solemn, in judicial robe
Jury leaves the room

Defendant edgy
Waiting on jurors return
Fate now in their hands

Voices of discord
Deliberation rages
Foreman calls for vote

Bailiff leads them in
Judge asks if verdict reached
Foreman answers "Yes"

"Guilty as charged, Sir"
The Defendant slumps in chair
Prosecutor smiles

Is true justice done?
Does the system really work?
Pray to God it does!

It's the best we have but nothing is perfect.  This makes one think Dennis.  I know there have been injustices by the courts
And sometimes the scales are tipped against the poor who can't afford a great lawyer.  Joyce

Unfortunately, having worked for a law firm, I've come to believe that good representation just isn't available, for the most part, unless one is wealthy. It makes me sad and makes me hope that I never need an attorney, because I couldn't afford a good one. One bright spot...at least with the advancements in DNA research, hopefully fewer innocent people will be convicted or sentenced to death.  Good poem, Dennis.

Wonderful depiction in poetic form of how scary the judicial system can be! You did a great job here, Dennis.  Ellie
