I like my grits in a bowl
with an egg and butter.
It just seems to taste better
than served on a plate.
Just give me some grits and
no complaint will I udder.
You can keep your cream of wheat
for me only grits truly rate.

Paladin~
LOL ! Made me hungry ! !
Mine's cooking RIGHT NOW !

I also like mine in a bowl~
My vice being stirring in well-cooked tomatoes !
Especially delicious to accompany these rainy Florida nights~

Thank you for the 'appe-teaser'

Tomatoes, Marge???   If one feels the absolute need to treat grits with utter disrespect, crisp bacon and good old American cheese are the only acceptable Southern way to commit such sacrilege.  A true connoisseur, of course, will choose simply butter, salt and pepper.  So sorry, grits are one of my few passions, I cannot remain silent.

You make them sound good, but I confess I have never been in the south where they are popular, so I have no idea what they taste like.

'Maters are okay.. on the side. But now some 'red eye' gravy and a 'cat head' biscuit would just be 'hog heaven'. :-)

I have never eaten true grits.  I have imagined them to be like hominy, which I like drained and fried in butter.  Joyce

Butter, hot sauce, bacon, cheddar cheese,
Cooked on the stove or microwaved with ease,
Living without them would just give me fits
Keep your cream of wheat and kiss my grits!

I enjoyed this very much, paladin - and enjoy grits, too!

i came to the poem cause i thought it would have something to do with john wayne due to the title, but i found a subject almost, though not, as good, grits are good any way you like 'em, us frenchies over here in new orleans prolly go with a little pan perdue (or french toast for everyone else) for breakfast but we got enough of the rest of the south to appreciate some good grits, or at least i do, nice poem, it was cute
