On Occasion

Well, I do
on occasion
if the scotch is good enough
But a beer
well, no
not lately
And an ale
I’ll say is okay
though it has been a long time
There were kegs
those Saturday
afternoons in spring
stretched out
to bleary evenings
But what did we know
college kids
after all
old enough, but
well, maybe
Hazards aplenty
and did we care?
we thought
we knew
Now ancient history
a lifetime ago
But on occasion
if the scotch is good enough
well, I do

Moderation is the key. I do, on occassion, enjoy a glass or two of wine, never cared for the taste of beer...is that because I didn't go to college? LOL  I enjoyed your poem Krawdad!

Krawdad:  On occasion, is permissable! I like a glass of white wine but have never cared for the taste of anything else.  Probably just as well! I enjoyed the poem.

I don't indulge myself, but sounds like you know enough to enjoy in moderation.  Cute poem.  Joyce

I do, too.   But the more problems I have, the more I have to limit those occasions - seeking numb only causes more problems.   Very well written - I enjoyed!

Thank ya'all for stopping by!
Enjoyed your comments.
Denise,
Well, I did learn to enjoy beer in college, so maybe you have something there.
Trillium,
Quality and taste do go hand in hand, and cheep booze is awful.
Joyce,
Actually it's a lot less than moderation.  Alcohol and I don't get along.
rich-pa,
Sure, the "beer experiences" were memorable,
but so was everything else that was new.  Keep a level head, man.
illusion,
I agree!  Numb is not an answer.
paladin,
I'll pass on the cigar, but the savored taste of a really fine scotch?, well, words don't do it justice.

Perhaps "all things in moderation" would be applicable... if it were not first tapered from excess. I still cannot even stand the smell of Southern Comfort... from some vivid imagery of long ago. Yet a nice brandy is somehow dandy. Guess it's 'know your yourself... know your limitations'
