My mother was a lady
And she taught me every rule
That a nice girl must follow
Or be held in ridicule.

She said to always sit up straight
And keep those knees together.
I must not dress in the latest fad
But according to the weather.

Shorts and such are for the beach
And then stay in the water.
Other girls parade their wares,
But surely not her daughter.

A girl must never call a boy
Or dare write him notes in school.
For every situation
Mama had her golden rule.

Only bad girls stayed out late
Or lingered long by the door.
If I didn't listen to her
I'd be ruined forevermore.

I tried to follow Mama's rules
And her ways to emulate.
But what would she say today,
Now that ladies are out of date?

About girls in designer jeans,
She'd say those were for the farm.
Pierced eyebrows, tongues and navels
Would be cause for great alarm.

Mama's ways are history now
And girls have won their freedom.
They dress in any way they please
And rules?  They do not need them.

No rules and more's the pity!  It was a gracious time we grew up in Joyce.

Oh, this one gave me some laughs. Sounds just like my mother. When my grandmother was in her teens (1890's) she told me it was a disgrace to show a little ankle!
Can't imagine those long dresses in an August heat wave

Thanks Trillium and Elizabeth.  And how did they keep those long dresses clean?  My mother spent her whole long life in a restricting corset.  Joyce

I really liked this.. Some of those rules weren't so bad.. I think if there were more "ladies" there would be more "gentlemen."  I think there was more "romance" in those days, and a lot more respect.

I enjoyed this very much - It's lighthearted, but provokes a lot of thinking.
