Hour of the Owl

There is an hour in the night,
When owls call from all around.
You seldom see them in their flight.
Just a shadow cross the ground.
I lie and listen with delight
To every strange and haunting sound.

Some call once and some call twice.
Then I'm hearing more and more.
They hunt hungrily for mice
Who scamper on the woodland floor.
A swoop, a squeal and in a trice,
Upward with their prey they soar,
to dine in solemn solitude
Or perhaps, with owlets share
And after they have fed their brood,
They go ghosting off somewhere.
Call and hunt again for food,
While watching, watching everywhere.

There is an hour in the night
When owl call is all you hear.
Even though they're out of sight,
They sound so very near,
I go outside in case I might
See one of them appear!

I've only heard them a time or two in my life but it is one of those things that you never forget! Very nice poem, Betty Lou!

I've only heard owls a few times - but love the night sounds of whipporwills and bullfrogs.   I enjoyed this very much.

Denise:  Thanks for your comments.  We have many owls around here, living in the country as wel do.  Several kinds and I do enjoy hearing them.

illusion:  Thanks.  I've never been where there are whip-poor-wills, but I read once that they can call for hundreds of times without stopping.  Must be an interesting bird to have around.  We do have bullfrogs here though.

Cpat Hair:  Thanks.  I'm glad you enjoyed the poem.  I always think owls sound mysterious when they hoot.  I like having them around and we do see one once in awhile, just at evening.

Liz:  Thanks.  We live in the country so we hear owls often. They sometimes nest nearby and we have seen the owlets but seldom the parents. We had a pygmy owl on our front porch one day and I couldn't believe how tiny it was.
