Exposed and vulnerable, unaware of it’s fate,
it sits and waits in silent anguish,
needing the game so desperately,
yet fearing the play of more devious pieces,

the knight slides forward with reassuring steps,
smiling gently but with deception in his heart,
stunned into immobility, it can only stare,
wide eyed and innocent, accepting the ruse,

it’s alter ego moves forward, to counter,
desperate to preserve it’s psyche,
only to be destroyed by the bishop,
slashing from the side, straight and true,

confused and disoriented, it steps forward,
the knight glides away, grinning at the folly,
and there, in that deadly space between them,
stands the mighty queen, mistress of the game,

smiling cruely, eyes devoid of compassion,
she rushes forward, toppling it with sudden fury,
spinning it into the oblivion of the game box,
a dark and pitiless hole of despair and pain,

alone and immersed in shame, it waits,
wondering why it bothers to play this game,
but knowing the answer before the thought ends..
it is the only game to be played.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

I like this very much.  It makes me want to learn the game of chess.  Joyce
