I am but a speck in the vastness of the universe,
of no more significance in the scheme of things,
than a grain of sand on a distant island shore,
or a cosmic microbe roaming aimlessly in space.

Of the trillions of specks intermingling in the void,
I am unnoticed except for the few that touch me,
the few that I touch, before I am consumed,
digested, recycled, reborn in another dimension.

Time has no meaning except to measure change,
it respects neither individual accomplishment,
nor the progress of humanity from cave dwellers,
to masters of an obscure planet in the milky way.

My needs, my desires, my concerns, are unimportant,
for they exist in a nanosecond, swallowed by eternity,
my cries rapidly fading echos swallowed by a vacuume,
that respects nothing except it’s own insatiable need.

I know not why I am here nor where I am going,
yet I exist, I function, I cause change briefly,
then I am gone, giving way to another speck,
and another, each as trivial as the last.

I am but a speck in the vastness of the universe,
speeding through space and time, through unknown portals,
as I pass the countless other specks in my path,
I can only hope that my flight has meaning for some.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Humbling thoughts!  All too true I'm afraid. Very good!

This does give pause for solemn reflection, and humility. But there is more than meets the eye- and I believe that as mankind-we are by God's goodness & grace given meaning & purpose, and also expectation which can yield yet a greater reality than what we have known so far.

Thanks for these interesting reflections.

I think you are much to humble.  You know God values you and all of us do too.   Joyce

Not often I stumble upon a poem that translates exactly how I see things. I just wish I'd written it down as beautifully as you did. Great poem!

Excellent! I feel exactly the same. Thank you for your profound poetic portrayal.
