You're dumpy, ugly, even blind;
Why do I hate you so?
I should be sorry for your fate,
Of creatures you're most low.
You hide beneath the ground and plot
How you'll destroy my world.
On my manicured and lovely lawn,
You leave mounds of dirt unfurled.

I fight with every means that's fair.
I won't destroy the worms
That draw you to my greening turf;
I'll fight on your own terms.
You've loads of pasture land to dig
If digging is a must.
Instead you take my pride and joy
And turn it into dust.

The animal activists, I'm sure,
Have never had a garden,
Or else they'd not be half so swift
In extending you a pardon.
God in His wisdom must have had
A reason for your being
But any good that you have done,
Is something I'm not seeing.

I wouldn't be so angry
If I stood an even chance;
But you hide beneath the fertile ground
And undermine my plants.
So take this as a warning,
You've been going much too far.
I'll find a way to show you that
I'm smarter than you are.

Dear Joyce:  Very cute poem but I can feel the frustration behind it too. I don't have moles.........thank goodness.......but I do have ground squirrels.  However, they seem to be staying in the outer perimeters.  Smart move!

I agree. Very cute. Kinda like a Caddyshack thing, eh?   Hang in there!

I enjoyed the laugh. We once had a small garden that gophers invaded.  One day, right before our eyes, we watched as a carrot plant was being pulled under the ground (almost like the cartoons). We couldn’t believe it.
I wish you luck.

mole?  i'ld a never guessed, i thought you had some weird bug or ants or something, we don't have moles down here in south louisiana, make that distinction and i think you have a wonderful piece.

I wonder why you don't have moles?  I guess they thrive on our big fat worms in our fertile soil.  Joyce

You may be unable to conquer your foe, but you wrote a delightful poem from your frustration.   I enjoyed this very much.
